Q. After attending your Career Boot camp I now realize that just posting my resume on social media isn't getting me anywhere. You told us to go out and meet people but where do I start, and what if they all ignore me? I'm so fearful I will never even get a job interview, let alone a job!
A. Whether you are looking for a job or just want to extend your networking on-line, social media can be the equivalent of mailing out 100 resumes to strangers. Your message goes in the "circular" file, aka the trash can. The best way to increase your odds of finding the right person to engage in your professional network is to build relationships online and, better yet, in person. Professional and trade associations or societies in your field, alumni associations, churches, interest groups and clubs, or any social setting is a chance to meet people. You will have to get out of your comfort zone to start networking. This is not easy but once you do, I think you will be surprised at how well it works, and that it's fun.
You may be shy, more comfortable at home, busy with other commitments, face child care demands and/or have a full-time job. There are a zillion reasons why you can't find time, and obstacles around every corner. Do it anyway. Sometimes the only obstacle you need to overcome is that voice in your head that defeats you. In The Magic of Thinking Big by David J. Schwartz, Ph.D., the author gives this simplistic but spot-on advice:
Mr. Triumph will show you that you can. Mr. Defeat will convince you that you will fail, while Mr. Triumph will demonstrate why you will succeed. Now the more work you give either of these two foreman, the stronger he becomes. If Mr. Defeat is given more work to do, he adds personnel and takes up more space in your mind. Eventually he will take over the thought-manufacturing division, and virtually all thought will be of a negative nature.
The only wise thing to do is to fire Mr. Defeat. You don’t need him. You don’t want him around tell you that you can’t, you’re not up to it, you'll fail, and so on. Mr. Defeat won’t help you get where you want to go, so boot him out.
Use Mr. Triumph 100 percent of the time. When any thought enters your mind, ask Mr. Triumph to go to work for you. He’ll show you how."
Get online, talk to a friend, professor, your boss, and pick one networking event that you can attend. Sign up and show up. (And while you are asking the friend or professor for ideas of where to go, tell them why you want to network and ask if they can make introductions for you too.) There are a lot more ideas for networking on social media such as Linked-In in The RED Workbook: Market and Brand YOU! See how to get it free below.
