Here are three signs you are on the short list to get a pink slip and what to do about it. If this is you, you can turn it around. First wake up and smell the coffee!
YOU HATE GOING TO WORK
Solution: Get Educated – When you are good at something it’s fun — if you don’t like what you are doing it’s a sign you might need to learn how to do something else. Take capability and interest tests, study the job market and then get educated in hard skills where you would enjoy the work.
EVERYONE YOU WORK WITH IS DIFFICULT
Solution: Get Better at Team Work – Some people are hard to get along with but if everyone in your work place makes you angry it could be the way you are interacting with others. There are skills involved — how to win friends and influence people, negotiation, and sales techniques are among them. If you have evidence you have a problem get help: find a therapist, coach, friend or mentor and ask them point blank if they think you have a problem and then find a solution.
YOUR SUPERVISORS and COLLEAGUES COMPLAIN ABOUT YOUR WORK PRODUCT
Solution: Learn How to Listen and Communication – You might need to address the first two (education and people skills) but it is also possible that better oral and written communication skills (including how to listen) could change this. You really CAN learn how to represent your work product and ideas more effectively. Read books, take courses, sign up for a workshop or Toastmasters. Practice. Get Feedback. Practice some more.
