The family saga begins when Johanna Kennedy, an Irish woman, and En Chang, a Chinese man emigrate from their respective countries to the United States. They become improbable allies navigating the racial and ethnic prejudice of the time, the hypocrisy of the Catholic Church, brutality between mine owners and union vigilantes, and challenges of raising children in poverty and enduring child labor. Ultimately, they face a decision to risk intimacy. As the railroads unite the country, can two people from opposites sides of the world unite to find strength in one another?

Exploring issues that are relevant today: immigration, ethnic and racial prejudice, violence, parenting, trust and intimate relationships, and moving them back in history gives me a chance to explore what is most meaningful to me.
